Falco Fusion Sports Drive is an eBike drive system (or ebike kit as some call it.) which converts any normal bicycle into an electric bicycle. The motor goes in the rear of the wheel and the battery installs onto the water bottle cage. The control unit slides onto the handle bar. The control unit is wired directly to the motor. There are no additional controller, or components or messy wires to deal with. How Does Falco Fusion Sports Drive System Works?

A Falco Fusion Sports Drive System converts any regular bike into an eBike or electric bicycle. There are only three components of the system - motor (fully spoked electric wheel), battery pack and control unit. There are no messy wires or additional components or controllers to deal with. The controller and electronics are embedded inside the motor. The fully spoked rear wheel contains the motor in the center of the spokes. The whole wheel simply replaces the rear wheel of your bicycle. The battery is bolted onto the frame of the bicycle ( water bottle bolts). All the needed hardware is included. The control unit simply slides over the end of your handlebars.

The Falco Control Unit

The battery pack delivers 50V, 420 watt-hour of capacity and the control unit allows you to have throttle as well as pedal assist control in addition to regenerative braking. Regeneration or regenerative braking allows you to charge the battery while riding. It takes excess kinetic energy and puts it back into the battery pack.
As you begin to pedal, the motor is automatically activated. This is called pedal assist. It senses the cyclists' torque and adjust the level of assistance accordingly. If you pedal harder, it will provide more assistance. If you pedal softly, it will provide lesser assistance. You can also activate the motor using the control unit. The plus can be used as a throttle. By holding the plus down, the motor can be activated. The harder you press, more assistance you get. As you release the plus, the level of assistance decreases. That is control of the motor with your hands.

How easy is it to install the Falco Fusion eBike System on my bike?

The system is designed to be super simple to install. The step by step instructions and all the included hardware will guide you through the simple steps. The level of assembly does not require expert handyman skills or tools. The whole process can be done in less than 30 minutes with only a few simple hand tools. The conversion process is simple and straight forward and simpler than installing coffee tables. Written and video instructions are included along with graphic illustrations.

Difference between 250 Watt and 350 Watt Versions

The 250 watt version is ideal for light weight riders who weigh less than 150 lbs. (68 kg) and intend to ride fairly flat terrain. 350 watt system is ideal for hill climbing performance. The marked differences in the two systems are power and acceleration. Since 250 watt system consumes less power, it will provide more range as compared to the 350 watt system. The 350 watt system provides 40% more power and is ideal for those looking for more performance.
The two systems are identical in appearance. The main differences are in the internal components such as magnets, winding and controller.

What is the range ? How far can I go ?

The Efficient Falco Fusion Drive System has the most impressive range of all the systems combined together.

Max range of 100+ miles is achievable. The average range is about 40 to 80 miles. Please see the chart below:

Under ideal riding conditions one can achieve great range. The ideal riding conditions include good roads, low friction tires inflated to recommended air pressure and well maintained bicycle components. The bicycle speed and rider weight also play an important part in determining the range. Lower speed dramatically improves range. Higher speed decreases range significantly. Changing the speed from 20 mph to 15 mph can increase your range by 30 to 50%.

In addition, using pedal assist is much more efficient than throttle only operation. It is impossible to increase range with throttle only operation. Motor will always overpower the rider and contribute 100% of the power. Under pedal assist, you are forced to contribute. Here you make a big difference. And with five assist levels you can have a fairly direct control over the range.

Most counties regulate the speed and power an eBike can deliver. Some of the limits are mentioned below:
USA: Speed Limit: 20 mph (32 km/h), Power Limit: 750W
Canada: Speed Limit: 20 mph (32 km/h) , Power Limit: 500W
Europe: Speed Limit: 15 mph (25 km/h), Power Limit: 250W
Japan, Singapore, Australia: Speed Limit: 15 mph (25 km/h), Power Limit: 200W
India: Speed Limit: 15 mph (25 km/h), Power Limit: 250W
Below these limits, no license or insurance is required.
Off-road versions go past these speed limits and provide pedal assistance to 28 mph (45 km/h). The off-road versions are illegal to ride on public property without certain licensing or/and insurance requirements.

Falco Makes British Cycling History

4th August 2014: Falco makes British cycling history with Falco powered Pace bikes in Rollapoluza's London Keirin at Herne Hill Velodrome.

" Completely silent, these pacing bikes, in themselves, capable of 78kmh, added a new aspect to the racing as the racers were unable to judge the arrival of the pacing bike, relying solely on the starters' gun" Track Cycling News

The innovative, specially modified electric bikes paced the riders instead of petrol Dernies used in Keirin races previously. Completely silent, the Falco powered pacing bikes, capable of speeds up to 78kmh, added a whole new aspect to the racing.

Derny bikes are used to regulate the speed of the racing competitors, the bike does one lap of the track and the racing cyclists are released by starting gun when the Derny bike reaches the start line at 30kph. The Derny bike is on track for a total of 3 laps before releasing the riders at around 55kph. Competitors complete one final lap as fast as possible.

Racing cyclists from all over the UK, the Netherlands, Denmark, the Czech Republic and Uganda fought their way through three scoring rounds to garner enough points to make it to the eight man final. In the format devised by Rollapaluza no cyclist in any category is knocked out. And those who don’t make the final for places 1-8, will race in minor finals to produce a full classification for all riders.

The women’s event though having a broader spectrum of talent was equally exciting and competitive with some of the closest finishes of the day during the first and second round.

It was fantastic day of cycling and a faultless performance from Falco powered ebikes.

Team Hybrids custom built electric bikes use Falco’s 500W e-Bike system along with the 48V AllCell battery pack and are capable of sustaining speeds of 65kph.

Falco has spent 5 years perfecting their innovative 5-Phase brushless permanent magnet technology. The HX system has embedded controller and torque sensors that eliminates the need for outside components. Falco’s inbuilt controller has 16 sensors to measure the motor’s current, power, voltage, temperature, magnetic field and torque.

The motor’s highly compact design has better superior power, torque and efficiency than the conventional three-phase motors. Reduced weight of at least 25%, improved efficiency of 10% increased power and torque of 30% and zero resistance pedaling.

The zero resistance pedaling is also a first for direct drive motors. This is achieved by minimizing the force of the magnets inside the motor to near zero when the drive is off. This means that for the rider the bike can still be ridden as an ordinary bike when he or she decides not to use the motor. But why anybody would want to do that when they are riding a bike with such an awesome eBike system is another matter.

The Scalable Architecture

Back in 2012, Falco had launched its' classic system, it was built on a scalable architecture. It was scalable on many fronts. Falco chose the industry standard ANT+ communication protocol. With this protocol, the drive could eventually be integrated with biometric functions. The drive torque and power also had to be scalable without redoing the tooling over. As a result of this, all the components had to be modular. Those goals were achieved and we were able to introduce platforms 3.0 and 4.0 in a rapid succession.

The 5-Year Warranty

Falco perfected the art of making robust and reliable drives. Falco implemented stringent quality control at all levels of the manufacturing process. The drives were tested rigorously before they were shipped to the customers. Falco was able to use that benefit by announcing a 5-year warranty on the drive in 2013.

The iPhone App that was not to be

In 2012, Falco developed an iPhone app based on the ANT+ protocol. However, with the introduction of the iPhone 5 and Bluetooth LE, that became a fairly unattractive option. The ANT+ adapter for the iPhone 4 was expensive and no ANT+ adapter was available for iPhone 5. ANT+ Android option was also not on the table as well. Another problem with the ANT+ those days was, that the battery on the smart phone could never last for more than 20 minutes while using the app and there was no easy way to charge the smart phones while cycling. We designed an integrated USB chargingport placed in the operation +/- switch which solves this problem.

The Wireless Console that was not to be

The ANT+ wireless console had easier acceptability in the US than Europe. That was surprising. There was almost a love hate relationship with this device. In the US, folks were more impressed that we had no wire from the handle bar back to the drive system. In Europe, they were less impressed with the fact that they had to change the cells in the console.

Freewheel vs. Freehub (aka Cassette)

Freehub Integration

Although, it was less important in the US that we had the freehub/cassette, it mattered a great deal in Europe. Apparently, Europe did not have access to high quality freewheels and it became a big issue. In the US, our customers liked the fact that we had a stronger axle and high quality freewheels. There were no issues commonly associated with the use of the freewheels on a bicycle wheel such as bending of the axle etc. Also our freewheel interface is made of hardened steel unlike the bicycle wheels where it is made of Aluminum.

The technology is built inside the hub of the bicycle wheel. 16 sensors monitor human, drive and bike interaction. The wheel provides assistance based on the torque produced by the rider. Falco Fusion Sports Drive has an integrated heart rate control function which allows control of the wheel through a target heart beat. The motor helps to maintain the heart beat. And when you no longer wish to pedal, you can activate power on demand which delivers the power directly to the wheel instantly.
